June Is Immigrant Heritage Month

June started with the celebration to the contributions immigrants have made to the tapestry of our country. Immigrant Heritage Month, is not only a recognition, but a reminder that our culture, our heritage have shaped this nation and have contributed to a diverse community. At the end, Being an immigrant is about finding your place while carrying your heritage with pride.

U.S Restrictive Order For Asylum Seekers

June 4th struck the refugee community with sad news from our current administration. Our morning started with a Presidential proclamation to restrict asylum during high encounters at the souther border. Asylum seekers will be turned away once irregular border crossings exceed an average of 2,500 and will reopen once the average number of encounters drops to 1,500 for at least 14 calendar days. The consequences for asylum seekers entering the U.S. irregularly during a shutdown will include an inability to seek asylum, rapid deportation, a minimum 5-year ban on reentry, and possibly criminal charges. This saddening ban entered into effect on June 5th at 12:01 A.M.

12 Years of DACA

Twelve years ago, the implementation of DACA transformed the lives of thousands of immigrants. DACA recipients have significantly contributed to our nation, adding billions in taxes, bringing fresh perspectives, and launching numerous businesses. As some recipients now reach their 40s, it’s crucial to advocate for a pathway to citizenship, recognizing that many of them have only known and loved our incredible country.

Finally, Relief to Non-Citizen Spouses

June 18th brought a delightful announcement from the Biden administration: new process to promote the unity and stability for families. This new procedure enables non-citizen spouses of U.S. citizens to apply for lawful permanent residency without needing to leave the United States. DHS estimates that up to 500,000 non-citizen spouses could benefit from this process.

World Refugee Day

June 20th marked a special celebration: World Refugee Day. While this day shines a spotlight on refugees, their contributions should be acknowledged year-round. According to UNHCR, in 2023 alone, 117.3 million people were forcibly displaced worldwide due to persecution, conflict, violence, human rights violations, or events seriously disturbing public order. This highlights the urgent need for help, relief, and advocacy, and we must emphasize this to our government representatives.

**Immigrant Heritage Month included the disheartening announcement of a restrictive order for asylum seekers. Despite this, the celebrations of 12 years of DACA, World Refugee Day, and the introduction of much-needed relief for non-citizen spouses made June an eventful month, recognizing the contributions of those seeking relief, opportunities, and a new home.

As we continue to advocate for updates to our immigration policies, which become outdated over time, we look forward to July with hope. Remember, no matter where you come from, we ALL BELONG**
